Joint Civil Society of Mizoram (JCM) announced today during a press conference at Aizawl Press Club that it will organize a statewide Candlelight Vigil on October 17, 2025. The vigil aims to protest against the Forest Conservation Amendment Act (FCAA), 2023, and to call on the Mizoram government to uphold Article 371(G) of the Constitution.
JCM appealed to all residents across Mizoram, including those in district capitals and rural villages, to participate in the vigil. People are encouraged to organize the event at their homes, neighborhoods, or community centers, either as families or groups, depending on their convenience.
Speaking on behalf of JCM, Pu Lalrammawia described the FCAA, 2023 as a serious threat to the rights and interests of the Mizo people. He reaffirmed the organization’s stance against the Act, calling for its immediate repeal and promising that JCM would continue to take proactive steps towards its revision.According to the JCM, the vigil is a symbolic yet urgent call to action, emphasizing the importance of protecting indigenous rights enshrined under Article 371(G), which provides special safeguards for Mizoram. The group has urged the public to join the peaceful demonstration and show solidarity in defending the state’s constitutional and environmental safeguards.
